Harry Price

Harry Price is professor of music and chair of music education at the University of Oregon, where he joined the faculty in 2004. Dr. Price received his B.M.E. and M.M.E. from Florida State University, and was a University Fellow at Syracuse University, where he received his doctorate.

Prior to coming to Oregon, Price was chair of music education at Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he worked with prospective and current general music teachers, and band and choral directors. He has also served on the faculties of the University of South Carolina as assistant band director, and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he directed the 320-member Marching Virginians and was a member of the music education faculty.

Price has been the United States representative and chair-elect to the six-member Research Commission of the International Society for Music Education. He is the past (1994–2000) editor of the Journal of Research in Music Education, serves as a member of the editorial boards of Research Studies in Music Education and International Journal of Music Education, and previously served as associate editor of Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. He edited Music Education Research: An Anthology from the Journal of Research in Music Education and has published more than 50 research papers in journals, including the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, and Journal of Band Research.

Price has made research presentations and been a guest speaker at state, regional, national, and international levels, including the Orient, Scandinavia, Australia, and Europe. Price’s principal areas of interest are classroom management, teaching and rehearsing in the music classroom and ensemble settings, and psychology of music. He is also keenly interested in fostering music education research internationally.
