Music Scholarships
Eligibility | Criteria | Application Process | Application Deadline

Among the scholarships available to students of music at the University of Oregon are the Ruth Lorraine Close Awards, which annually provide scholarships to many outstanding graduate and undergraduate students for advanced study. Information on music scholarships is available from the Undergraduate and Graduate Offices of the School of Music and Dance. Information on the other financial aid programs is available from the University Office of Student Financial Aid.

If you wish to be considered for a School of Music and Dance scholarship, indicate this on your School of Music and Dance application. You must include with your application:

  1. A resume of your musical experience
  2. A repertoire list (works you have performed)
  3. Three letters of reference (two of these must be from music teachers)

You should also complete a Financial Aid Form (FAFSA), obtainable from any college or university financial aid office, and have the results sent to the University of Oregon.

ELIGIBILITY
Admitted undergraduate and graduate music majors and dance majors are eligible for scholarships, which may be granted for more than one year. To determine scholarship recipients, School of Music and Dance faculty rely on the applicant's academic record, and in music performance, on an audition on the applicant's musical instrument. The audition is to be in person if possible, but by CD, cassette tape or video recording when necessary.

CRITERIA
Most music awards are given on the basis of musical achievement and academic accomplishment. Department of Dance awards are given on the basis of merit. Some scholarships in both dance and music include the criterion of financial need.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Students should complete only one application to be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. Scholarship application forms may be obtained from the Department of Dance Office, the Music Undergraduate Office, or the Music Graduate Office, 1225 University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, 97403-1225.

As part of the evaluation process, School of Music and Dance faculty will use the individual's application file or student file as well as audio or video performance tapes submitted by the applicant. Recommendations and other evaluations are also of value.

In addition to School of Music and Dance scholarships, individuals are encouraged to apply for other scholarships through the UO Office of Student Financial Aid and the UO Office of Admissions.
